Covid Disrupting My Mums End Of Life

Just joined this minute in need of advice please.

On Wednesday last week Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the oncologist suggested Mum could be weeks or months to live. Mum has cancer in the womb, cervix and in the bowl. Between my brother and I we have been caring for her for some time now and it’s not getting any easier. Some days she is little better and today one of many days Mum is struggling and is very poorly. I feel if though someone has punched a massive hole in my stomach and feel completely useless. I love her dearly as of my brother.

My other dilemma is this. COVID 19. I am driving to Mums every weekend to take over from my brother as he has looked after her during the week, of which he is clearly emotionally exhausted. We are both being as careful as we can be in this current climate not to infect ourselves with this virus for obvious reasons. The Doctor said Mum will remain at home and there will be a MacMillon Nurse to make contact this week sometime on the phone.

Mum has been ill for months and now clearly we are seeing a rapid decline. Mum needs us more than ever.

When I drive up the car I am frightened the police are going to get heavy handed with me for traveling so far. I can’t emphasise enough she is receiving no assistant apart from us until something turns up what ever that may be.

We don’t know what lies ahead in these coming weeks or months.

How can we ask for care when everyone is on lock down with very limited resources, who is going to help with 24 hour care?

  • Hi, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum.

My Mum was diagnosed last year with terminal lung cancer, and more recently a cancerous brain tumour.  My Mum was doing well and managing with the cancer until about a month ago. That's when the brain tumour really took hold and we looked after her at home for as long as we could. Long story short, she is now in a marie curie hospice.

I would call Macmillan because I'm sure they can support you, like they have us. If you haven't been referred to them yet, chase the GP. I had to do this, even though Mum was terminal and very poorly. We also had a home care company come and help a couple of days a week (which we paid privately for). This was only 2 weeks ago and allowed within the coro rules. I appreciate the heightened risks with coro 19 but we needed help.

I really hope you get the support you all need. X
