Struggling with Grans bowel cancer diagnosis

My 90 year old Gran  has been complaining on and off for a year about pain in her stomach but both the GP and the walk in centre told her it was constipation. The past few weeks she has been really unwell and lost a lot of weight. She was admitted to hospital a week ago after she fell in her flat. The hospital have done some tests and are convinced that she has bowel cancer which has possibly spread to her other organs as she has deteriorated massively in the past few days.

As she is so frail, the doctors have advised that they cannot treat her but put her on palliative care. It's horrible to see her suffering the way she is but I'm so scared of her dying too. Is there any way of knowing when she is coming to the end because as much as I am terrified, I want to be with her when it happens.

  • Hello Jaycey22,

I am so sorry about your gran's bowel cancer diagnosis and that she is so frail at the moment and has been put on palliative care. It must be so hard to see her suffering. To answer your question, often it isn't easy to tell when someone is dying with cancer. We do have some general information on this page on Dying with Cancer which may be of interest to you.

Thinking of you and your gran during this difficult time.

    Best wishes,
