Who do you contact when someone passes away at home?

My husband has been told he only has weeks to live and wants to pass away at home. I'm terrified but does anyone know what I should do when it happens? Who do I phone ? Thanks

You can look them up on their website as well to see how they help.

  • Hello Betsy.

I am sorry that your husband is nearing the end of his life. As I know only too well these are very difficult times for all concerned. Like your husband my late husband wanted to spend his last days at home and while we put all our energy and strength into looking after them and caring for them, we also have to face all the practicalities involved. When my husband passed away it was just myself and family there, nothing like the adverts that some of these charities portray .

The first thing that has to be done is contact your GP who will cerify the death and issue a death certificate. The next step is the funeral director who will no doubt guide you through from there.

I hope this has been of some help to you and that your remaining journey is as peaceful  as is possible.

    Kind regards,

    Lynne.

  • Thank you for your help I hope that my husband passes away quietly in his sleep at home.

  • Hello David thank you for your kind and so sorry for your loss. The district and trinity nurses have both been in touch so we are fully supported. Thanks again

  • hello,

my dad passed away at home after his battle with cancer, and the district nurses will give you all the information you need, we had a night nurse sit with him every evening so when he passed they called the out of hours district nurse and then me, then the doctor on call called when she could to log his passing and take out the shringe driver, it was all done with the family sat round dad, and so delicately handled with care and compassion :) i was with him from 6am to 3 or 4pm every days then one of my sisters from 2 or 4 to 10pm when the night nurses came, please do not be afraid to ask for help, we had sue ryder come out and plans care and they were amazing they organised the district nurses, if he was in pain id call the district nurses and they would come out and give him a shot, honestly please ask because i couldnt have got through the last 7 weeks of his life without them and i know my sisters couldnt have either they were like a support network to us..

take care, i will be thinking of you

  • Hi - thank you so much for sharing your experience and so sorry for your sad loss. The nurses have been in touch so it is reassuring to know they will take care of everything and I don't have to worry as much. Thank you x

  • thats good one less thing to worry about at this sad time, my only advice is to take each day at a time, then when the time is drawing near, each hour, each min at a time x x
