How much longer can this go on?

Hello,

Ive been reading lots of posts and it's given me great comfort. I just wondered whether anyone could help give me some clarity on my current situation. In July we found out my dad has terminal non-small cell lung cancer. Initially he went downhill fast but then picked up after a few rounds of chemo. After that finished he started to go downhill again, and was hospitalised on 12th Dec after not being able to breath. They found huge build ups of fluid on his heart and lungs which he now has permenant drains in. Each time they try and remove the drains it builds up again and he can't breathe. He can't walk now and is getting bed sores and is in a lot of pain. We also learnt the cancer has spread pretty much everywhere; it's in his major organs, blood, lymph and probably brain.
more recently his voice box partially collapsed making it difficult to talk and impossible to swallow, so they want to put a Peg in to feed him..

Looking at him he has no quality of life and without all this surgery I'm sure he'd have passed away already. I'm just wondering how much longer they can prolong life with surgery, and then what is likely to be the cause of death? It's so hard to watch, I don't know what is to be achieved with more surgery as he's not going to get better!?

Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post, I just feel desperate.

  • Hello Beth_G

I'm so sorry to read about your Dad and all that he has been through these past few months. Undoubtedly it's been a difficult time for you all.

I wondered if you'd raised your concerns about this proposed surgery with his care team? They would be best placed to say why they feel it's appropriate for your Dad to have this procedure and what his future care plan is. If you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses before speaking to Dad's team for some advice and support then you're welcome to call them. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
