Terminal NSCLC

Hi all

My Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 non small cell lung cancer spread to bones and kidney this was approx 7-8 weeks ago. Dad has lost a staggering 18kgs in that time and now isn't well enough for any treatment so now palliative care only.

He has had several infections in that time and has been in hospital for over 2 weeks now. He's on all sorts of meds but gets very agitated when his pain relief wears off, we (sister and myself only ) have asked for  a syringe driver to be put in to support the pain relief but theyre dithering about it. Hospitaldrs were wanting to send him home but he cant even  sit up anymore he isn't eating anymore and drinks very little. I got called back from Australia due to his diminishing health. We've now managed to get a referral to a hospice. How long does this awful disease take before the body gives up. He is suffering so much and in turn so are my sister and I. He is only 66yrs old. The Dr is now saying about taking the morphine down as he is seeing things so what can be have instead.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Janis although I'm really sorry to read about your dad.

I know I can't take the pain away but I do hope this information about what to expect in the last weeks and days will help you and your sister. It can be a tough read so maybe you could work through it together when you both feel ready.

Our members, sadly, are no strangers to this so will know what you're going through at the moment and will hopefully be along soon to offer their support and advice.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to talk things through with them as well.

Wishing you all the very best at this difficult time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
