Confused about Dads secondary liver / lung diagnosis

10 days ago we received the heartbreaking news that my dads prostate cancer has spread to lungs / liver despite finishing 8 months of chemo in June and things were looking good then. He had it in bones for a few years but being managed well.

Consultation implied the prognosis as bleak, no treatment option available and they referred  dad to the local palliative unit for down the line. However they put him on steroids & the lift they have given him in 10 days is incredible. Appetite back full swing, gaining weight, energy full swing!! This is all great. Yesterday he got call that he's in for a PET scan next week. We are confused - if things are so bad why does he need this PET  scan. Is there any hope for him?? We have cried so much but now we see him bouncing back and wonder did they make a mistake? Anyway have experience of steroids Dexameth?) or Pet scans after a terminal disgnosis. Thanks for reading x

  • Hello Threescompany

I'm sorry that Dad's recent appointment has brought some bad news.

It's good to hear that Dad is feeling better as a result of the steroids. The changes that you mention in his appetite and energy levels are common side effects of steroid treatment and these would typically stop when treatment does.

I'm unsure why the PET scan has been requested. It may be worth speaking to the hospital or the palliative care team to ask for more information.

I hope that Dad continues to do well on his current management plan and that you're able to enjoy the time that you spend together.

    Best wishes,
