Need to know

My brother has advance stage 4 throat cancer. There are several tumors and the doctors have found that after the latest round of chemo, they are still growing and it is just risking his health in other ways so should be stopped. He is nil by mouth with a g-tube, has a tracheostomy and is unable to leave the house. The not knowing is the worst. I have no way to plan for how to approach the end and wanted to know how long we have together after treatment stops. They are giving him 2 weeks of radiotherapy to ease the pain and swelling but after that there is nothing else they can do. He had radiotherapy before and became so weak and it was so painful that I cant imagine how he will get through this now that he is even weaker. They say it hasn't spread but he's starting to get headaches (i think from pressure on the nerves) and I find it harder not knowing than trying to hope for the best. Does anyone have a similar experience of this?

  • Hello Needfull,

I just wanted to drop by and say how sorry I am to hear about your brother. There's no way of knowing how long he has, but I would suggest you get back to his consultants. It will help to go through all your questions with them as they know most about the cancer and where in the throat the tumours are located. Writing down your questions and concerns can also be useful and make you feel better prepared. We have information and resources for coping with cancer available, there are also guides for making plans, which I hope will allow you to enjoy the time you have together as much as possible.

I hope this was of some use,
