My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer with nets in his shoulder, hip and lymph nodes in September. He was given a year with treatment and months without. He managed 3 of the proposed 6 rounds of treatment. They had to be tailored down as the first round made him quite poorly. He then became insulin dependent as the steroids affected his diabetes. He has some radiation over the New year. He was asked if he wanted a scan to see progress and on March 11th we were told the cancer had further spread to adrenal glands, brain, back and the rumour in lung has grown. They delivered the devastating news that he has weeks to live. We are nearly 2 months since that dreaded day. He had a short stay in the hospice a few weeks back as he had got very confused. They said this was toxicity to the opioids and changed refine and that seem to work. They then put him on steroids. The steroids are making him eat good amounts, but that is making blood sugars out of control. Although there are signs of decline, he is still fighting. He dies say he will get better and doesn’t always remember prognosis. It’s the scariest rollercoaster I’ve ever been on. My dads wishes are to stay at home, I’ve neen off sick from work for 6 weeks now. My mum was beginning to struggle. It’s an honour to care for him, despite the fact he has become stubborn and declines pain meds and nebuliser. He continues to smoke very heavily, and is up most of the night now. This is my first post as it’s hard to know where to start!!!!
