Terminal diagnosis

Hello

My MIL has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer - from stomach to liver and lungs . She is 78 . chemo was offered but would only offer two months and she has only been given three months to live . No trials and no offer of immunology . Perhaps because she has had crohns ? Has anyone had a similar situation and had a second opinion or any other offers of hope ?

  • Hi there ..

So so sorry your family is going through this heartbraking time ... the one thing to remember is chemo can be so very hard , even on younger fit ones ... if she has more health problems going on, that get more severe with age ... sometimes there comes a point, where instead of spending whatever time they have just trying everything and having all the side effects, it's a time to make every day count ... fill that time with things she may still want to do ..

I'm 64, and since my masectomy and grade 3 cancer, is what I'm doing .. I'm taking every day, long or short, and filling it full of memories. . I've done xmas in Florida ... I've spent time with those l adore .. and in not looking at what may / will happen, just live in the day ... spend time asking her about her life .. bet she's got some funny / touching times she's had ...

We can either lay down and just wait, or we can say, I'm here today ... if she really wants treatment, then that's her right .. but if like me, she says no then respect we don't live forever .. there's a time to hold on and a time to let go ... once your all on the same path, with her leading the way, in whatever she wants to do, you will all get through together ...

Sending you all a vertual hug .... Chrissie x

  • Thank you fr your reply . I guess it’s because a friend of ours had a similar situation but has now found out he could have immunology. It’s just seems like not exploring every avenue .

  • Hi there ..

Just do your homework .. find out what it is... what it does .. results from it .. how long and the side effects .. but every cancer is different .. then when you find out if it's a possibility... then talk it over with M I L  ... good luck ... worth looking into ... I've heard some good things ...

Let us know how it goes .. it's always good to have info on here to pass on .. I will look it up myself  ... fingers crossed ...  Chrissie x

  • unfortunately I don’t think we have enough time for my mother in law . But our friend has resorted to going to Germany for tests and it looks like his cancer could react well to immunology so he is having treatment soon . There is a hospital in Southampton which is one of the specialists in the country but he can’t get his treatment on the nhs as it is 1 inch away from the area licensed by NICE . But I will let you know how he gets on .

  • Hi. I am 84 and fit and healthy(so I thought). I have'nt any symptoms but have stomach cancer.  I was given 1 year to live a nd just palliative care but I had a second opinion  3 weeks ago.  I am starting chemo on Thursday followed by an op. after a 3 month course.   It is a hard decision to make but I have been given a lifeline and I'm not ready to go yet but I'm very scared

  • I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Yes it’s all very frightening. I think if you are quite well in yourself you have a good chance and my neighbour has had chemo and it has been very successful for her and she has a good quality of life . It sounds like you have found out quite early . Hope everything works out for you and that you have family around you to support you .

  • Thank you for your reply.  I start chemo on Thurs. and hope it is'nt too bad for me to tolerate.   I have a very supportive family and friends so I am lucky in that respect.                      Kind regards
