Kidney cancer spread to bones and liver

Hello,

My dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer late last year. In Feb they tried to operate on it but the cancer was wrapped around important arteries and there was a huge amount of blood loss so they weren't able to. They cut off the blood supply to it but weren't able to remove it as planned.

He recently had a ct scan and then a consultant appointment in which they told him that the cancer has spread to his bones and his liver. They also discovered that he has extremely high calcium levels so have admitted him to hospital again.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea of prognosis/ life expectancy? He's not a well man anyway as he's lived a very unhealthy lifestyle with a lot of drugs and very little exercise which will of course not help.

Thanks so much.

  • Hello ifyouseenatalieE,

    Welcome to our forum!

How unfortunate that they were unable to operate your dad due to blood loss and to the fact that the cancer was wrapped around important arteries. I am also sorry to hear that the cancer has spread to your dad's bones and liver and that he has had to be admitted to hospital again.

It is obviously really hard to determine what his prognosis might be as this will depend on so many circumstances and his particular individual medical history. His medical team will be most aware of his situation, how his cancer has progressed and will be in the best position to give you an indication as to what to expect. So don't hesitate to ask them for more guidance on this.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you want to talk things through with them. You can call them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope your dad feels a bit better soon and that he doesn't need to stay too long in hospital. If you have a chance, do let us know how he gets on.

    Best wishes,
