Tumour pressing on main heart artery

Hi

My dad has terminal cancer however one of his tumours is pressing on his main artery to his heart, so we have been told he'll actually die from heart failure.

We know he doesn't have long left but I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this and ultimately what happens at the end, I'm constantly thinking how it will be - will there be any signs or will it be instant or will it be like a heart attack.

  • Hello Needtotalk0,

Your poor dad how unfortunate that his tumour is pressing on his main heart artery and that this will cause heart failure.

I hope someone else who has been in this specific situation will see your message and share their experience with you. It might also do you some good to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 and to talk things through with them. They may be able to tell you a little bit more about what to expect in your particular circumstances. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We are all thinking of you during this difficult time.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

my father has advanced lung cancer that has spread to his lynthnodes.

he was diagnosed on June 1st 2020 and now 8 weeks on we have been told that he will pass within 7 days.

we have been told that he will pass due to the cancer pushing down on the main artery to the heart and will be via heart failure.

i cannot find any information online regarding this, your story is the only one I have seen with similarlrity. Can you please provide information of how this happened and if any signs lead up to this?

Thank you - sorry for your loss.

  • Hi Luke

Sorry that you're in a similar situation to what I went through.

My dad died the following day after I wrote that post.

So during that night he struggled alot to breath, all the doors and windows had to be wide open as he kept saying there was no air, even though he had his oxygen mask he wanted fresh air.

This followed into the morning, I suppose he went into a very sleepy state. Like when you wake someone up in the middle of the night and they arent fully with it.

In the very last hour he was just asleep until the nurse told us his pulse had stopped.

It was really only that 24 hour period where it was obvious his air supply was being cut off.

I'm sorry that sounds very to the point but I know when I was looking for answers I just wanted everything black and white.

Again really sorry that you're having to experience this.

  • Hi,

    sorry for your loss.

as our dad has this advanced lung cancer that has spread to lymph's as Luke as explained we were told 3 weeks to then be over the weekend to now be told they shouldn't have said that and it will not be in 3 weeks so my dads been in a nervous state not sleeping due to thinking he will not wake up.
he's only 53 very active and life loving.

as you've said your dad with the shortness of breath did you find he struggled more in the nights?
did they give chemo/immune pherapy and dexa pherapy? My dads recently been stopped but is being reassessed to see if treatment can start again as our palliative nurse couldn't believe she was coming to fit the end of life pain relief and refused to as "he isn't a dying man"

obviously we understand the cancer isn't the problem.. the cancer pressing against the artery is.

with the sleepiness my dads not slept for 5/6 days and if he has it's 2 hours or less.. would you say your dad was like this?
also how was his appetite as my dad is eating everything I'm site!

they have said his organs will shut down and he will have heart failure did your dad have this or was it pretty instant? I really don't want to see my dad suffer anymore than he already has. It's a cruel world, there's so many bad people in the world and all I keep thinking is why my dad.
I can now see how this horrible thing rips family's apart!

  • HELLO

sorry for what you and your family is going through,

my dad had lung cancer but on his death certificate it said lung cancer & the posh word for blood clot , i spoke to the doctor about his swollen leg, and she said it was probably a clot but has dad was in the final stages of dying it would be more of a blessing if it found his way to the heart.

2 days later he passed in his sleep with a smile on his face .. i guess the doctor was right, he passed quickly in his sleep after weeks of suffering

    hope this helps a little

  • Hi, sorry if I've misunderstood are you and luke related or where you just referring to having been told a similar thing as luke?

My dad was very short of breath all the time in the last couple weeks.

He didnt have any treatment as it all happened so fast and he had a late diagnosis.

For 6 months he was told the lump he found was a groin strain and just kept giving him physio, he got to the point he was in agonising pain, couldn't sleep because of the pain and ended up seeing a chiropractor who knew immediately it was cancer and sent him for a private scan.

Once he got his diagnosis they found his primary cancer was bone cancer which developed a secondary cancer which was lung cancer.

From finding out he had cancer in mid november we were told in January there was nothing they could do as it had spread rapidly and the tumors had developed in his chest.

He didnt really have much of an appetite and he didnt have any organ failure.

And yes he hardly got any sleep because of the amount of pain he was in, he had regular doses of morphine and other pain relief but nothing helped. It was awful to see him in excruciating pain.

Yes I thought the same thing, why my dad, it's not fair.

Although it can rip family apart, I do find after all the funeral you do come closer as a family.
