So confused and angry

Christmas 2017, Mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer which had spread to her right lung. She responded well to chemo and had debunking surgery in August.

We we were told this was successful, and that she would have a follow up appointment in December. At this appointment mum mentioned she’d had a chest infection. The doctor ordered a scan and late December we were told the cancer had returned to the original sites.

On January 3rd mum complained of migraine, she then had what I though to be a stroke. We were told it was cancer to the brain and nothing could be done. They are sending her home on palative care, hospital bed delivered etc.

Im angry, I feel the doctors abondined her after the surgery, there were no follow up scans, no chemo etc. For the entire last year I asked them for a scan to the brain as if lost a friend who had secondary cancer to the brain. But was fobbed off with “Ovarian cancer doesn’t spread to the brain”

my mum is 61, she’s not ready to die and I feel no ones even willing to listen to her request for a second opinion or to try a clinical trial.

I dont know what what to do.

    Hello Hammy,

I am so sorry to hear about all that you mum has been through. This must be absolutely heartbreaking for you. I lost my mum 21 years ago when we discovered that her breast cancer of 12 years had metastasised to liver, lungs, braib and bone.

At that time treatment bore no comparison to what we have today. I say that from experience. I myself, developed 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years and, the treatments which we have both had are like chalk and cheese. Great strides have been made in cancer research in the interim and already, people are living with cancer, rather than dying with it.

Your mum is perfectlly entitled to ask for a second opinion. If you phone up her consultant's secretary, I'm sure that this can be arranged.

Please keep us updated and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx
