Mum been diagnosed with a couple of months live

How accurate are doctors re time left. My mum 74 has lung  cancer and it has spread to her lymph nodes in throat and adrenal glands. She is a tough cookie and is taking the time quoted very literally. Based on her cancer what expectations time wise. When I have spoke to people they tell me of people who have lasted longer than diagnosed time.

My take on it is life resumes as normal until it can’t staying strong for now x

  • Welcome to the forum Scottydog although I'm very sorry to read about your mum's diagnosis.

We have some information on our website about survival rates for this type of cancer but if you'd like to have a chat with someone about this then do give our cancer nurses a call next week. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

As you've found out from others, everyone is different and I do hope that your mum is able to go beyond the time frame the doctors have suggested.

Best wishes to you both at this difficult time,

  • Hi my Mum was diagnosed Oct 10th Adenocarsinoma lung cancer stage 4, Its in the lymph nodes and liver and they said she had months not years with or without chemo, Such a blow.. After talking to Oncologist again early Dec they said they couldn't give a time but i kept asking and said 6months, She said possibly 7 ?? Even though things could change. So we still really don't know as they said everyone person is different. They said enjoy the time you have while your well enough but she seems to have caught 2 infections 1 after the other within a month and still trying to get the right medication for anti sickness...Like you i'm staying strong and taking one day at time. Sending my thoughts to you..

  • Hi Scottydog.

I saw your post and it struck a cord with me. My mum had stage 4 lung cancer and was given 5-6 months and I have to say at 4 months she was looking very much herself and you would perhaps be forgiven for thinking she wasn't terminally ill at all.

As others have mentioned it is very much dependant on the individual; my mum deteriorated rapidly in the final 2-3 weeks and she passed away just under 5 months after diagnosis. My mum was also a very tough cookie and being a northerner didn't understand what it was to give up or feel pain.

But you're absolutely right, you carry on doing normal tasks and maintain status quo until that inevitably changes. It was very much day by day and I'm sure you can relate to this. I hope you are managing to cope and your mum is staying strong.

    Best wishes
