Lung cancer, what to expect

My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last week, purely by accident as she has no symptoms whatever.  She was in hospital because she was having diabetic hypos,  incontinence,  mobility and short term memory issues. She was diagnosed with cerebral atrophy and had a chest CT scan because they thought she may have had a blood clot.. The consultant was as shocked as us to find that she had several tumours that had spread to her adrenal gland , ribs and lymph nodes .We have managed to get her into a nursing home which is a relief but I really don't know what to expect from now.  There are no treatment options but doctors are reluctant to give a timescale.  What are your experiences?  X

  • Hello Suzannex; so sorry to learn of your mum's diagnosis; this must have been a great shock to you.   I think, from my own experiences of helping cancer patients (not many) that it is very difficult to know how individual patients may react.  I have known great variations from patients with similar diagnoses. I know I am not being helpful but can only advises being watchful for any changes in your mum's condition and not hesitating to ask for information from those caring for her if you are concerned.  Sometimes you can get a very gradual deterioration; on others things can suddenly get worse. I hope others can provide more helpful information.  I would only advise that you make the most of whatever time you have with your mum.  Make sure you say things that you want your mum to hear.  Annie
