Prostate cancer

My doctor's surgery was taking PSA readings each time I had a health check. I was told at the time that if anything untoward was seen I would recieve a phone call. I trusted the doctor's word. That was sixteen years ago!

Sufferring with abdominal pains I visited the surgery early this year. A blood test showed a PSA reading of 58 YES FIFTY EIGHT  Subsequently I was examined by a urologist,I had all the tests and scans and was told that I had Prostate Cancer with a Gleason level of 7.The cancer had spread to my bones. After calling for my medical records I discovered the surgery had stopped conducting PSA tests in 2012, six years ago !! No mention of this was relayed to me . I am now having hormone treatment but have been told the bone and prostate cancers are incurable.

Furthermore after more tests including a colonoscopy it was discovered I had bowel cancer  with a T4 tumour;. in a four hour operetion a large part of my bowel was removed . Unfortunately not all of the cancer cells could be removed, and am now enduring chemotherapy.

I have been told my condition is terminal but I have not asked for a prognosis as yet.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Mike although I'm sorry you've been told your diagnosis is terminal.

I'm also sorry for the way you found out that your GP surgery had stopped conducting PSA tests and didn't inform you. I can't begin to imagine how you were feeling when you found out.

We have many members here on the forum that have unfortunately found themselves in similar situations to yourself and I'm sure they will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

I know there isn't much I can say or do to make this any better for you but I want you to know that we are here for you and will do what we can to support you on your journey.

    Kind regards,
