Grandfather been given 4 - 6 weeks

Hi. New here after my grandfather receiving a terminal diagnosis a week ago.

Primary was bowel but has mets in lungs, kidneys, liver and brain. He is being treated only with dexamethasone to reduce swelling as he was very confused.

The prognosis is 4 to 6 weeks and I am under no illusion that he will deteriorate, but other family members are finding it hard to reconcile the prognosis with the man they see in front of them.

Since starting the drug he has become more lucid, is managing some daily activities and is eating like a horse . Some minor confusion but very "sprightly" all in all! ( im aware the steroids can assist in increased appetite)

Am I wrong to feel more prepared than the others? Or am I being defeatist?  He certainly doesn't seem like a man a few weeks from death.

My heart is breaking but I'm trying to make sense of it all.

  • Hello Sidekick.

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear about the news about your Grandfather.

I think many of the members here will agree that there are no hard and fast "rules" about the way we should feel when someone recieves a cancer diagnosis. We are all individuals who manage our thoughts and emotions differently and there is no right nor wrong way to feel.

It sounds as if your Grandfather is managing well at the moment. I hope that during this period you are able to spend time quality time together.

Please do keep in touch if it helps you through the coming weeks and months. Sending our best wishes to you all.

  • Thanks Jenna.

I feel like my post was very clinical and didn't mean it to be.

I manage to keep myself together around him and others and fall apart elsewhere.

He is doing well at the moment and I'm so very grateful for that.

I will keep in touch. Think I will need the support.

    Thanks.
