Stent

Hi my grandmother is 87 and has terminal cancer, since April she has said all along that she doesn't want anymore treatment. However, the swallowing has become worse and she has started to bring up blood. The hospital have said that they can put the camera down and to see if she can still have a stent. I just want to know is it right to put such a frail old lady through this operation I've read of people's complications etc afterwards she hated the camera first time round I don't want her last time to be up and down the hospital she wants to die at home. Can anyone help is the stent recommended or not at this late stage thank you x

    Hello Maidhop,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your Grandmother's diagnosis. Whether or not to install a stent is a question that only your family can decide. Have you had a frank discussion with her surgeon or consultant? They are in the best place to help you to reach a decision.

Complications can occur with any operation, but I would imagine that there are more of them with the frail elderly, than with younger and fitter people. If they did occur with your grandmother she might not get her wish to die at home.

If you want another opinion why not phone the nurses here on 0808 800 4040? It is free to phone from a UK landline and they are very helpful. The only problem is that nobody other than your Grandmother's care team, has access to her medical notes, so they don't have all the information they need to make an informed decision.

I do hope that you manage to reach a decision that all of the family is happy with, and, that she manages to die at home. Please let us know how things go. There is always someone here for you whenever you feel like talking.

I am thinking of and praying for all the family.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
