Terminal bowel cancer

Hi, I am struggling to cope with my terminal diagnosis, i am a single mum with a 14 year old son and want to try and stay alive as long as I can to look after my son. The background is this: After two years of going to my GP I was finally referred last March and was found to have bowel cancer I went on a drug trial for panitumumab then had surgery in July and more standard chemo up until Christmas. All seemed to have gone well but I have now had a pet scan which shows two new areas of cancer in the abdominal cavity (not on the bowel) the hospital have said they can do nothing more, palliative care is my only option, but have said they will pass my details on to specialist unit as they are a "centre of excellence" and "may" agree to more surgery (which is what I really would like). I just wondered if anyone had any idea if this was likely? Any other suggestions gratefully accepted (but please no comments of "stay strong" "fight" etc) this is an illness which needs medical treatment not a battle in suits of armour! Also if anyone has first hand experience of how long I can expect to last as I can never get the doctors to give me an idea which is so frustrating.

  • Hello lisalou,

I just wanted to stop by and say I'm sorry about your situation and that I hope our forum will provide the support you need.

Feel free to browse Cancer Chat for stories similar to yours and jump in the conversation, in case you don't receive a reply here. Sometimes, depending on how busy the forum gets, some posts get pushed down the queue and with that there's a chance that members who can relate to what you are going through right now might miss your post.

I hope this helps. Just remember, we are here for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello lisalou, I am very sorry to read about your situation. I don't know if anything I write will help ,buy i thought I would try. I wondered where you are based as I know that Royal Bournemouth Hospital is a centre of excellence in the south. I had rectal cancer in 2012 and received surgery and chemo there. They have an amazing team. I wonder if it might be worthwhile you contacting them. I also know of several peaple who have tried a change of diet, lots of fresh juicing and use of tumeric which I was told by my surgeon, showed scientific research to be beneficial in Bowel cancer. I realise this may be of no use to you but perhaps any snipets of information may lead you to a hopeful path. All my very best sentiments are sent to you x

  • Thank you [@supatrooper]‍ I appreciate you taking the time to reply, I'll have a look at Bournemouth- I'm up t'north but if someone tells me there's a cure on the moon I'd be there tomorrow I also hadn't really thought about diet etc. So I will take that on board too. Thanks again x
