Hi your post struck a chord. My mum's chemo stopped working last October and after a few months she was admitted to a hospice on Christmas Day. Each day I went into see her I never knew what to expect. One day she'd be sleeping all day, the next sitting up watching TV and completely lucid and then the next walking up and down the corridor with the nurses. These active episodes were usually after she had been given intravenous fluids or calcium infusion for her bones. Sadly these were temporary measures to keep mum as comfortable as possible. Ironically on the day my mum was looking better, the care team at the hospice met with me to discuss plans for moving mum out of the hospice either back home or to a care home [apparently they are only short term refuges and many people go in for respite care and symptom management and then leave to go home]. In our case, two hours later the doctor pulled me to one side and said her blood test showed her liver and kidneys were failing and time was now running out. 24 hours later my lovely mum passed away peacefully. I'd be inclined to ask the consultant to be honest with you in terms of what's going on as I found the hospice nurses were always positive and saying how great mum was doing; it was the doctors who have the real inside track and I needed to know that to help me prepare myself.
