My dad has got terminal pancreatic cancer

My dad was diagnosed in February with incurable pancreatic cancer it has spread to his liver. I live near my mum & dad and my one sibling my brother lives 140 miles away. I have a really tough job 2 kids and a mega busy life and am finding it hard to support my mum. She is struggling to deal with my dads deteriorating psychological state. His symptoms are that he has got a very swollen abdomen which is uncomfortable. He is on Oxycodone slow release tablets 15mg twice a day. He is having palliative chemotherapy. My dad is 73 and my mum is 70. They have run their own business for 40 years and still work now. My husband has recently taken over the business so that is taking the strain off my parents. I am dreading what is to come, the deterioration. It's heartbreaking. What are your experiences of this dreadful disease?

  • Hi my mum 67 was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in June 2015, with mets to liver. Prognosis was bleak - she could not have surgery and was placed on pallative chemo. After 9 rounds of pallative chemo mets had disappeared from her liver and the Tumor had shrunk by 80% - to date it has laid dormant - but to us dormancy is as good as remission. We take each day a step at a time. Some are positive and upbeat - some are the pits - but remember all you can do is try your best - I have told my story as we come on here looking for hope and inspiration X - forgot to add - I live near my mum - she still works fulltime and my brother lives far away - you will find strength x

  • hi, this is the most positive thing I have read reguarding pancreatic cancer, my dad was diagnosed December (2018) and starts his first round of chemo today, is your mothers still dormant ? Xx

  • my dad is in hospital waiting for a bed at the hospice he doesn’t have long it’s all just happened so quickly the rumours have doubled in size and spread to lymph nodes in stomach, he is in a lot of pain and it’s extremely traumatic and devastating to see iv just got back from hospital to return later on today it’s been the worst day of my life second to diagnosis, it’s come to my attention that I have no real friends that I can turn to it’s weird the things that gets brought to your attention in your timescale of need. I’m angry I’m so very angry this is so unjust and unfair my dad believes in karma and always helped the homeless and anyone really in need with food / money because he always said he would get good karma ... where is it ??? I’m sorry for being so negative I just want to scream at the world

  • I’m sorry to hear this. I know exactly what you’re going through. It’s a very cruel illness. There’s nothing anyone can say that will make you feel better. You need to be with your Dad at this time. Talk about the good times and say everything you want to say. It’s a very tough time. Continue doing what you’re doing. I feel for you. Take care xxx

  • I’m so sorry to hear this. You’ve been a support to him through these dark times and he will have felt that love you have for him. I hope this gives you some comfort. This is a truly horrible disease and no person or family deserves to go through it. My thoughts are with you xxx

  • I am so sorry to hear this. It has bought a lot of emotion back for me when I lost my Dad in January. My only solace was and still is he is no longer suffering xxx

  • Thankyou all for your kind words, I was holding his hand all night as was my siblings and mum we didn’t leave the hospital day and night one or all was with him, he passed with just my mum we had briefly left the room i think he wanted it that way to save us from seeing him pass, but my mum is a nurse and said it was the most peaceful passing she has ever seen, it doesn’t seem real i think I’m still in shock it’s been hitting me in waves all day I feel completely broken, I have an amazing family and I know we will pull each other through but the world for us now will always have an empty sad space missing iv never seen pain in somebody’s eyes as I did my mother’s today it’s utterly heartbreaking, we have made some really wonderful memories the last 6 months which will be forever cherished, I told my dad everyday that I loved him I’m thankful I had the opportunity to do that, I will think of you all on your past and present journeys this chat has helped me express emotions which I fear I would have suppressed to protect my family, I will still check in on you all please give the person you are on here for a massive hug today and tell them you love them xxx

  • just wanted to check in on how you all are xxx

  • Hi, just read your post, my mum was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer Wednesday night this is secondary as they found a tumour may last year she then had the whipple surgery end sept then 6 months chemo which finished in may this year, she almost straight away from june started getting pain in her stomach she described as labour pain she was back and forth to the doctors being treated for constipation!! Then an xray to check for arthritis then back to constipation again!! To her finally giving up and ringing 999 this week to be told its returned with a vengeance and is now terminal,  were an extremely close family and shes the best of the best  were heartbroken and angry that its happening I also have children who adore there nanny and are going to be devastated but at the moment they dont no as there her wishes, shes currently waiting to come home tonight or tomorrow untill we no if shes eligible for treatment and what that will be.  Were being robbed of our amazing mum at so young and it makes me so angry.
