Lollypops

Hi,  I visited the hospital yesterday to find the large cotton wool ear bud type things in water on my Fathers table.  How close is he to the end?  Last week the doctors told me weeks to days, or anytime.  Is my Dad now facing final days rather than weeks?

I know that this is an impossible question, but I just want his suffering to end. :-(

  • Hi Jose

Sorry to hear about your dad. You are right it is impossible to say, but if he isn't drinking for himself and not receiving fluids intravenously then it could be his last days. The lollypops as you call them are more of a comfort thing to moisten the mouth of someone who isn't taking fluids by mouth, so doesn't necessarily mean the worst. It depends on the other factors.

My Dad went downhill very quickly and the day before he passed he wasn't drinking and seemed quite dry, so my mum tried to moisten his mouth with the bud things, but he just wouldn't take it. He was ready to go.

It is horrible to watch a loved one suffer. I hope the suffering doesn't last too long. Be strong and take comfort from being there for him. You will be in my thoughts during this difficult time x
