Brain tumour coma - how long - weeks or months

My wife was diagnosed with astrocytoma grade 3 in left temporal lobe in 2010. long story in short after surgery and radiation, chemo the tumor is back & now she is in deep coma for the last 6 weeks. her eyes are bulging out and bleeding. My question is whether this suffering can go on for months . I know this is her end but I'm not able to cope with her suffering. what is the maximum duration cancer patients bear this kind of coma. Please give me some kind of idea.......this is devastating for me & my 2 kids.

  • Hello Manig64,

I am very sorry to hear about your wife.  This must be a very difficult time for you and your family.

I am afraid to say that because I am not involved in your wife’s care I am unable to say how much time she has to live.   I realise that this is difficult to read.  Your wife’s specialist doctors and nurses who care for her will know much more about her situation and may be able to have an idea of how much time she has left.  However no one can give you an exact time.

Please do talk with your wife’s specialist team about her care and your concern that she is suffering.  Sometimes when someone is in a coma it can be difficult to know how they feel and that they are comfortable. However the nurse and doctors caring for her will know that she is and would want to know about your concerns.

I hope you and your family are getting some support at this time.  The hospital where she is being treated may have a palliative care team (often known as a Macmillan team) that can help.  They can also help find specific support for your children.  A UK charity called Winston’s Wishes can help children and teenagers cope with the loss of a parent, you can see their website by clicking here   Teenagers can also get support for themselves on the Rip Rap website.

    I hope this has helped.

You would be very welcome to give us a call if you wanted to talk about this on our Freephone number is 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

    Take care

    Caroline
