Only palliative care now for family member

Hello all. This is my first post so please let me know if I'm in the wrong area, or have said the wrong thing.

in not going into too much personal detail as I don't know if my family read these forums. But felt like I needed to ask some questions.

a very close family member of mine has terminal bowel cancer. They originally had surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. They have recently been told it has metastasised to lungs and liver.

they have been told they have no more treatment options apart from some steroids. I'm sorry, I don't know all of the details. The doctors wouldn't give them a prognonsis - would I be right in thinking we should expect less than 6 months? They are very tired and weak already.

i have something I want to ask, but I don't want to upset anyone here. How does someone with this condition usually actually die? Is it from a related illness like pneumonia? Please forgive my bluntness, I am trying to prepare myself for what's ahead.

thank you

  • Hi,

Those are hard questions to answer, if you're in the U.K. you could phone one of the nurses and ask them - freephone

  • Hi Daffodil

So sorry to hear that.  I don't know about how long, sorry.  My dad has weeks left but his cancer is prostate and is in his bones, so different.  I hope you have been able to find some answers x

  • I am very sorry for your family member.

I dont have the answers your looking for am afraid, but I will say I have been piecing a jigsaw together about my mums terminal  cancer. Its not that your being morbid. For me I wanted to prepare myself realistically for what the future holds. My mum didnt want to know how long but with reasearch and process of illimination, speaking to the lovely staff on this website and macmillan. I reakon I have a good idea of what to expect.

I hope this helps even just a little.
