Macmillian nurses

Hi. Can the Macmillian nurses give u a drug, to help u passover, when dying of cancer. I've been told they can, but isn't that uthanasia, which is illegal in the UK

  • Hi Dana J,

Thank you for your post on the forum.

Macmillan nurses do not give drugs which help someone die. As you say this is euthanasia or assisted dying which is not legal in the UK.

The role of Macmillan nurses is to help people who are terminally ill manage any symptoms they may be experiencing. Often this can involve giving strong painkillers and other drugs but these are given in a controlled way to help reduce symptoms but not to help them die.

Quite often Macmillan nurses will see people towards the end of their lives but this isn’t always the case, sometimes people need help with symptoms or general support while they are having treatment.

    I hope this answer helps.

    Kind regards,

    Deborah
