Lung Cancer confused

Hi everyone thanks for letting me join, I have a problem Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer March 15 he also has COPD and respitory failure he got 5 week radio treatment as he was far too weak for chemo. In March gone on Paddys day we were told he was at end of life care but 2 days later he bounced back and this has happened 5 times since. Yesterday he was very grey looking and he has been asleep for 2 days straight no food or drink for 4 days but an hour ago he woke and asked for a cup of tea so I gave it to him and to be honest he looks the picture of health apart from the sleeping. We have been told by the hospice nurse that he seems fine for now but the end is pretty near. I was wondering of anyone could shed a bit of light on this for me as we really don't understand how he can keep bouncing back from death like that but each eposide is leaving him weaker and weaker he is only 61 but weighs just under 6 st he looks so frail but omg he has some fighting spirit. The nurse said that he times between each bad turn is getting shorter and shorter so I am wondering hiw to pin point how much time we really have left. He is far too weak and frail to do anything or go anywhere but we could do something at home to cheer him up a bit. I read somehere last night that if he declines week to week then we are talking of a matter of weeks only because he bounces back each time the hospice have said they cant give us a time frame. I am angry hurt and confused my pops is ny hero he raised us all on his own and he was always there no matter what it is killing me seeing this shell of a man in the bed where my superman used to be.

  • Hi

i think the hospice nurses usually are quite good at this so maybe it really is just that they cannot say. My mum recently died from lung cancer and it took everyone by surprise - to the point that we weren't there as we were told to go home as she was stable and improving (she had pneumonia). Try to take it day by day and maybe have something prepared that you could do if he has a good day or good few hours - favourite-  music to listen to or book to read aloud? My mum enjoyed crossword puzzles. Both my parents died relatively Young in their 50s and I know how scary it is to imaigine life without your dad but you will be okay ️Sorry you are having to go through this xx

  • Thanks so much for the reply as of today it is now 6 days since Dad has eaten proper food, we managed to get a small yogurt into him and the odd cup of tea. He is still in and out of sleep and they have increased his oronmorph and his mst meds so hopefully we will see a different Dad soon.
