survival rate - stage 4 cancer?!

Hello

I Just want to find hope and hear hopeful stories on here of people who have known family members or friends - who managed to recover from "terminal" cancer.

Parents
  • Hello,

My father has recovered from stage 4 prostate cancer that has spread to his spine, damaged his spine and nerve and got him paralysed from chest down.

He was given very little chance to ever walk again. He had a surgery on his spine, and received radiotherapy and hormone therapy. 4 weeks later he started to recover slowly slowly and went to a rehab. ( didn't receive any other therapy after this) a year later today he is walking on his own for short distance, relearning to drive, and 100% cancer free.

    There is always hope!

  • Thanks so much for this post that I've just seen. My grandad is 83. Has been fit and healthy all his life and walks miles every day. He suddenly lost use of his legs and they found a tumour on his spine. It has spread from the prostate and so this is very similar to your dad as my grandad has stage 4 cancer.

He has a blast of radiotherapy which means he has regained the use of his legs etc but now has to slowly learn to walk again. Can I ask how old your dad is please? Your post have given me hope as it's early days and we are in the dark at the moment other than knowing he is having hormone injections.

    thank you x

  • My father is 65. He was diagnosed last november(stage 4 already). Lost his ability to move from chest down one day in April, then he had a surgery and then received 4 weeks radiotherapy and hormone therapy, and then spent about 5-6 months on rehab.

He started to feel his body straigth after his surgery, before he received any treatment. Still could not move. Within days he was able to move his foot only, and about 2 months later he was able to stand up sit down and do a few steps with help. Then as the time went on his spine recovered and he has got better and better every week. He also had zoledronic acid infusion that helps in spine/bone recovery. He also trained a lot, forced himself to walk as much as he could 2-3 times every day, now using a stepper and a row machine as well.

He just had an mri recently, his spine is still not fully recovered which is why he still cant walk a lot, but thankfully the cancer has gone completely, which is very surprising as he didn't have much treatment, and as far as I know there is not much chance to recover from stage 4 cancer.

I really hope your grandad will be okay too soon! So far it's very similar to what my father went through.

If you have any further questions please let me know x

  • Hi,

I'm 19. I have very, very bad anxiety issues. Any little bump I go crazy thinking about it. Were there any telltale signs for that stage of cancer? I've had a swollen lymph node under my armpit for about two months now causing pain down my arm and now my neck has started to swell up.

Everywhere I look on the internet points to cancer. I guess the internet isn't the best place to look for someone with anxiety issues like me. Anyways, would the symptoms be pretty obvious at stage 4? If so what symptoms would arise?

  • Hi,

My father said he had no symtoms at all until he started to feel pins and needles in his legs. He went to the doctor with this, and then he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The cancer has spread to the spine pushing on a  nerve which has caused the tingling sensation in legs.Originally he had prostate cancer, but that didnt have any symptoms.
I dont know if you have cancer or not, but if you think you might, you should go to a doctor. Its best asap, and if you dont have cancer its not healty thinking you do especially with anxiety, so just go to a test, so your mind can calm down instead of worrying about it and not knowing.

Also I understand you have anxiety, but if you keep thinking about bad things will happen, then eventually they will !

  • Hi RP990,

Please talk to your GP about your anxiety problem.

Meanwhile try to look at things logically.

Cancer is predominantly a disease associated with old age, you are 19.

Teenage cancers do exist, but these are very very rare.

Swollen lymph nodes are common, cancerous lymph nodes in teenagers are very very rare.

When people are diagnosed with cancer, most of them are diagnosed at an early stage. I was a rarity and was diagnosed at stage 4. Every cancer case is different, some people diagnosed at an early stage have obvious symptoms, some of us diagnosed at a late stage have no symptoms or very insignificant symptoms.

Health anxiety is a real condition and can be debiliitating - the symptoms are amplified by inexpert and uncritical search engine research.

I hope you soon find the help you need to overcome your anxiety.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hey

I've found out I have cancer of the spine, I have been paralysed from chest down also, I was told I'd never walk again, I have had little physio, but me and my dad have been doing exercises to get my legs going and it's working! What did your dad do? Did he change his diet? What exercises did he do?? Sorry for all the questions but I'm desperate! I only got diagnosed in august, so I'm still in shock as I've been an active person who usually runs around after my daughter and doggy!

  • So my dad had a spine surgery after his got paralysed. (I really believe here they just removed the tumor that was pressing on / damaging the nerve)  2 days later he was able to move his big toe onyl without even feeling it. So thats when he started to have some hope . He had treatment (hormon and radiation theraphy), and he was recieving zoledronic acid jab every month i believe ( this is the one that helps with spine / bone recovery)
He spent the next 4 month on rehabilitation where he had to do certain movements, first he was put on a machine that stands him up and sits him down, and" hes been doing " exercises where someone moved his legs/ hips for him every single day. its important that you move around all the muscles around the legs ( calves , hamstring, quads, glutes, hip flexor etc). So every week he was able to do a little bit more on his own, and i believe 4 months later when he left the rehab place , he was able to stand up and walk about 20-30 meters with a walking frame. Then things slowly got better, and about a year later he was able to walk slowly, but without any support. Then he learned to drive again, and he is still fine, still a little bit slow, but can easily walk up on stairs, and he can drive , climb ladder etc ...
I would say force the movements, even if you get really tired it is very important . My father did some exercise ( or few steps) every single day for his recovery. Even when he was only able to walk to the door and back to the bed , he still did it at least 2x a day.

I really hope you will recover quickly, if you have any questions feel free to ask :)

  • Thankyou soo much for your response!
it really makes me determined! Just a quick question, I didn't have any rehab and your dds rehab sounds brill, did the NHS sort that out for him or did he go private?

  • You're very welcome, I know exactly what you're going through! Theres always hope, and remember a lot depends on your attitude and your mindset! :)

So we are from Hungary, so he was in a rehab place in Hungary, and I think initially the hospital sorted it out for him, but only for 4 weeks, so after that my dad had to pay them weekly to be able to stay. It was worth it at the end :)

His cancer came back few months ago sadly, but he is still doing well and his spine is okay too. Let's hope it stays like this :)

  • I think we all look at internet but know it's not good and not correct , I took suffer with anxiety I think it's natural to feel frightened I like others are here for you to talk , shout, scream, cr , what I can tell you is I was born with a rare childhood cancer had various treatments chemo, radiation, surgery etc even given the last rights but was still being checked up to the age of 14yrs ev n photos in medical books. Got stage four breast cancer 2017 with liver and brain, but I here seven years later. What I'm trying to say is medicine has moved on so much more options, don't look at i ternet , because if you check internet you notice it is all out of date treatment. Also you like me and others are unique your body will fight this we will fight this with you, you are never alone. 'm a catholic and pray to our lady Mary, please don't give up your young if you read forums like these you will be amazed at what people have gone through and still her decades on. With love ️ Maggie
