Can You Treat Terminal Cancer??

Hello guys, i have a loved one who doesnt have long left to live. is there any possible way of treating terminal cancer??

  • Am sorry that you are going through this. It's a difficult time so big hugs to you. Both my mam & dad had terminal cancer. Both had chemo to delay & with my mam she lasted less than an year after being told she had less than 2 years initially.  It's her funeral today. Dad isn't good either & not sure how long he has either his scan is next week. Make the most of the time you have with them.

  • Hi Sully,

Sorry to hear that you are in this position. It all depends on the type of cancer, how aggressively it is growing, how far it has spread and the fitness of the person who has it.

Have the doctors actually used the word terminal? Sorry to ask but it has a very specific meaning and when hearing their diagnosis people often hear the words inoperable, Stage 4 or incurable and wrongly assume this also means that they are terminal.

Palliative care treatment is available which will be used to try to slow down the growth of the cancer, if possible shrink it, and to manage any pain or other symptoms.

In my Mum's case she received palliative care which extended her life by just over two years (she was 70 when she died). In my own case, palliative care has already extended my life by over two and a half years after being diagnosed. Sadly, I have also known other people who weren't so lucky and they died not long after diagnosis, despite receiving almost identical palliative care treatment.

I hope this helps answer your question.

    Best wishes
    Dave
