My dear Mother-in-Law

We have recently found out that my mum in law has terminal cancer. It was growing in her bowel for a couple of years. None of the scans, bowel exams, xrays, colonoscopy;s detected it.It is now in her lungs, kidneys, liver and bladder. Now we are faced with loosing her. She has been given a few months left with us. None of us are coping and neither is Mum. She has terrific nurses who visit once a week but no other support apart from family. She started chemo tablets at home on Saturday taking 10 pills a day. She said today she cannot do it anymore. She doesn't know whether she is coming or going with all the pills. We begged her to keep trying but she just can't keep up with all the pills. Some have to be taken at certain times, some 1 hour before meal, others after 2 hours of meal. It is a shame that she has no support from any cancer charities, although she did phone macmillian nurses today to help her with a form.I feel absolutely useless because I cannot help her other than support her.

  • Hello Tina67,

A big welcome to our forum. Don't feel useless - you are obviously doing a lot for your mum in law and I am sure she appreciates all the support you have been offering her. Has she got one of those nice pill boxes to help her remember to take them? There are some fancy ones available that help with remembering what to take when. I am sure some of our members are used to having to take so many pills a day and I am sure they will have some good tips for you that you can pass on to your mum in law.

Have you also heard of Boots Medisure? It can help provide a solution to a number of problems with taking medicines. Find out more about this here and have a look at this leaflet.

We have some information here about taking medicines which will explain why it is important to follow instructions when taking medicines and to take them at the correct times. Don't hesitate also to ring our nurses or to pass on our nurses' number to your mum in law and they will be able to advise her on this. Their number is free from the UK and you can ring them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

I hope this helps and also that others will be along shortly to share their own tips with you!

    Best wishes,
