Lung cancer - Spread to liver - End advice

Hi,

I've never known anyone with cancer so I just have a few questions and after Abit of advice really.

My grandma was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and by the time they had found it, it had already spread to her liver. She was told that it was terminal and that she had 10-12 months with treatment.

She has suffered with her breathing since before her diagnosis, but this has only gotten worse. She reacted well to the chemo and the lung cancer shrunk slightly.

She went back to the docs 6 weeks ago and the tumours had grown again and she was in a little pain, she's gone back today and it had grown again. The docs have said no more X-rays, just morphine and steroids to ease the pain and keep her comfortable.

My real question is how long do you think she has left? She's started to loose her appetite and has become really down and doesn't want to do anything. I don't know if this is a sign of the end or if this is normal. I want to try and be prepared. I live a couple of hours away from her and don't want to take any time for granted.

Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Danielle

Noticed that you had not yet had a reply so wanted to welcome you to the forum (its been of great support to me in the last couple of years).  Its a very hard question to answer as each person's journey is different.

From a personal viewpoint my hubby had lived with incurable cancer of the lung linings for almost three years, receiving palliative chemotherapy which like your  grandma slowed the growth down for a while.  He was kept comfortable with pain relief but eating did become a serious issue and his was prescribed nutrional milkshakes/steriods and kept a close eye on with regular check ups both with his consultant and the GP until such time as he required visits daily by community nurses attached to our GP surgery. As he became more poorly the nurses visited as often as required (this lasted for around a week) and because he chose to stay at home we had all necessary equipment to keep him comfortable. He was mobile albeit  unsteady until 24 hrs before he passed away, having spent those last hours chatting with family and friends and dare I say it. smoking a cigarette (when I was out of the room!).

No one can be 100% aware of when the end may take place and I would just say spend what time you can with your grandma and be guided by your family and the medical team (the doctor who saw my hubby the night before he passed away said it was likely to be days rather than a week but realistically no one can be sure).

If you would like to talk to the Nurses on the site for more information they can be contacted mon to fri 9-5 on the number on this page which is free from landlines and most mobiles but because its B/H weekend I think Tuesday would be the earliest time you could give them a call. Take care Jules54
