Mum in Palliative Care for 8 weeks. We don't know what stage she is at and how long she has left. It's so distressing

Hi my mum has been in palliative care for 8 weeks after being fast-tracked from hospital where she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and bone metastasis cancer in the spine.   Mum refused treatment and her condition had deteriorated since 20th December when she started to become more sleepy but when she has been semi conscious she has been agitated, incoherent and we were expecting the call to say mum had passed as she has not eaten or drunk much at all for 10 days.  On day 11 she perked up and was talking to visitors and seemed much more aware of her surroundings etc.  unfortunately this did not last and the following day she was very agitated and would not look or speak to us when we visited, even though she was not asleep.  Today she was extremely anxious, sobbing, delirious and scared of the hallucinations that seemed real to her.  We were able to calm her and explain that these were just hallucinations caused by either the medication or progression of her cancer but this is so distressing.  My sister and I are really struggling to understand at what stage mum is at and how long she will have to endure this torment.

  • Hello Trav1972.   I am so sorry to hear what you and your family are going through.  I think that you want an honest answer don't you?  It seems that your Mother is very near to the end.  When you mentioned that she seemed to perk up a little bit.......this is something that very often happens to folks that are near to their end.  They seem to get a rush of energy from somewhere and then they go down hill fast again.  I apologise profoundly if i Have been too honest with you, but I don't believe in sugar-coating things, especially when folks NEED to hear the truth.  I am so sorry.  xx
