Pain medication allergy

I have terminal TNBC met to the liver and other areas in my abdomen and for the past 2 years ive been ok, yes the chemo is brutal every week but ive felt fine. This last month or so ive had nothing but pain, like everything has come at once. My whole torso hurts especially if i lie down and my shoulders are painful most days and the last day my legs and feet have  began to swell.
Im allergic to opioids after being in hospice back in 2013 for spinal tumour pain management we found all i can tolerate is methadone i cant take any gabapentin pre gabs morphine anything at all. My worry is this pain will worsen as the cancer progresses so how do we control it?

  • Hello JenlouT

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been struggling with pain. It sounds like it's been a really difficult time for you, and it's understandable, given your previous experiences with pain management that you have concerns.

Have you spoken with any of the health professionals involved in your care about the pain that you're experiencing? It is important to mention it to your specialist nurse, oncologist or others involved in your care, as well as telling them about the swelling that you've mentioned. Investigating these changes will allow the specialists to consider any medications that may be helpful to you in managing the symptoms. Hopefully they will also be able to give you some reassurance about other options for managing pain that may be available for you.

If it would help to talk with one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Please let us know how you get on JenlouT. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
