Stage 4 lung cancer

My father was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with lung cancer, spread to lymph nodes and pleural space but no biopsies or treatment recommend due to his general health. We suspect mesothelioma as he has asbestosis. He has declined rapidly, not going out, barely eating or drinking and sleeping 20hrs plus a day. We were told around 2 months without treatment. With peoples experience do you think the end is imminent or could he go on in limbo like this for longer? He has no quality of life and it’s hard to watch, especially for my mother.  Thank you.

  • Hello MWBW

I'm so sorry to hear about your father's recent diagnosis of lung cancer and how his health has deteriorated since. It's obviously a very difficult time for you all and natural that you have questions and concerns.

It's difficult for anyone to say how much longer your father may live. Are you receiving any support and care from the local palliative care team? They will be best placed to talk with you about his overall health and how things may progress. If not then please do get in touch with your father's GP who will be able to arrange for them to contact you. They will be able to support both your parents and ensure that your father is kept comfortable.

We do have some information on our website about dying with cancer that may be helpful to you but if you would prefer to talk with one of our nurses for some information, advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you're able to access some support soon.

    Best wishes,
