Making a decision to refuse more treatment

Five weeks of my precious remainder of life has been taken from me due to an extreme reaction to immunotherapy. I am suffering from colitis which has been painful & distressing throughout.

my oncologist has suggested a drug to strengthen my bone but expensive dental work is required first.

should I refuse more treatment and accept my fate and hope for a simple pain controlled exit?

  • Hello Ginxy

I'm so sorry to hear that you experienced an extreme reaction to immunotherapy which has resulted in you struggling with colitis.

Whilst it's good to hear that your oncologist has suggested that there are further treatment options available for you, it's understandable that you want to weigh up and consider both the pros and cons of accepting more treatment versus declining the suggested option. It's a very personal, and often difficult decision to make but one that I know a few of our members have considered and I hope that you will get responses from other community members.

Do you have close family and friends around you Ginxy? Sometimes it can help to talk through your concerns and questions with those loved ones. I'd also really encourage you to talk with your cancer nurse specialist or Consultant about your dilemma. Hopefully they will be able to answer some of your questions and offer some reassurance about what will happen whatever decision you make.

We do have some information on our website about deciding to refuse treatment. If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Whatever decision you make Ginxy, please know that the Cancer Chat community is here to listen and offer any support that we can.

    Best wishes,
