Husband doesn't have long to go and my 13 y/o is really struggling. I don't know how to help him

My husband has stage 4 and not long to go. We have 2 children. The oldest is 13 and really struggling to cope. I have tried so hard to find any help and all I get is leaflets given to me. The boy needs help! He needs to talk to someone. School are useless. Dr's no good... I do t know where else to turn. It's just an added stress with all we have going on right now. X

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Tuffty76 although I'm so sorry to hear your husband may not have long left.

I can't begin to imagine how difficult this must be for you and your family but our members are here for you Tuffty76, and I'm sure those who have experience of supporting children in this situation will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

It must be incredibly upsetting to see your oldest struggling so much and not getting the support they need. I know it's not much, but I do hope some of the resources I've found can help. We have some general information on supporting children when someone is dying on our website, and Macmillan and Marie Curie have some useful information on preparing a child for the loss of a loved one on their websites as well.

Hope Support is a charity that offers support to anyone aged between 5 - 25 who has a loved one with a serious illness whilst Winston's Wish and Grief Encounter are both dedicated to helping young people cope with the grief that comes after losing a family member, so do be sure to reach out to them as I'm sure all these charities will do everything they can to support you and your children at this time.

We're thinking of you Tuffty76 and are sending all strength and support your way.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
