My dad has bowel cancer - how and when do I tell my youngest child?

My amazing daddy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2023. His general health is too poorly to risk any treatments or procedures. We're just playing the waiting game and it's breaking my heart.

My 14 Yr old daughter knows pretty much everything but I don't know if &: when I should tell my son (8) ... grandad is the only man who's had a major part in their lives, they cherish every moment ...

He's starting losing weight , regardless of the mountain of treats he has lol ... one life eh!!!

Just looking for advice/ experiences with how and when you've told the younger children. Xxxxxx

  • Hello Tinatiatobes,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad being so poorly with bowel cancer - it must be truly heart-breaking for everyone around him. Other members of our forum will have been there before and had to talk to their children about a grandparent's diagnosis and I hope that they will be along shortly and tell your more about their personal experiences, what worked for them, how they broached the subject, what kinds of words they used...

I thought I would also mention that our website has really useful information on the subject of talking to children about cancer. I hope that this will give you a little guidance but as nothing replaces hearing from personal stories and experiences, I will now let others who've been in a similar place before come and say hello and share their insights.

Best wishes to you and your family during this incredibly difficult time,
