Dad’s treatment is being withdrawn

Hi there,

My Dad is 84 years old and been suffering from blood cancer(MPN/MDS).

He’s been in hospital for 7 weeks and despite having 3 transfusions, they’re making little difference to his severe fatigue and he’s practically bed bound.

The doctor came round yesterday and said the treatment isn’t working so they will have to stop.

Does anyone have any idea what sort of time frame we’re looking at if his treatment is stopped (probably impossible!)?.

We were looking at nursing homes before this diagnosis however would he be classed as palliative care now?

Any advice would be greatly received as we are all in shock and have had  no contact from the hospital as to what happens next.

Thank you

  • Hi woodyt,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear about the situation with your Dad and also that you haven't had any answers so far.

It's very hard for anyone here to advise on your question unfortunately, so I hope that you're able to speak to your Dad's doctor as soon as possible, to get an idea of next steps and what to expect.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses to talk things through, you are welcome to give them a call. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Thanks Ben.

I saw the doctor this afternoon, who’s’bedside manner’ wasn’t the best and basically said that Dad had a month at best.

I don’t know what I was expecting but it was still a shock as was for Dad who got very upset

Dad’s 90 year old brother is coming tomorrow to say goodbye..

    This is so very difficult
