Dad with metastasised Gastro Oesophageal Junction Adenocarcinoma - what does the end stage look like?

Dear forum,

My father was diagnosed with Gastro Oesophageal Junction Adenocarcinoma that had metastasised to his lungs, liver, and bones in October 2023.  He has now (January 2024) undergone 6 rounds of chemo with some improvement to his swallowing and some slowing of the disease's progression. (at time of diagnosis he was told he had 3-4 months without treatment, maybe a year with treatment).  An answer his doctors can't or won't seem to give us - what does the end stage, i.e. dying, of this disease look like? I know every diagnosis and patient is different, but would really appreciate hearing stories or testimonials from those who have a relative or friend who died from this disease - what were the symptoms/progression in the last few months?  what was the ultimate cause of death? was there anything that helped make the patient's suffering better?  I apologise if this seems grim, I just like to know what might be coming down the line here.  Thanks very much to anyone willing to share their stories!

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat scgLondon although I'm sorry to hear your dad has advanced Gastro Oesophageal Junction Adenocarcinoma.

Hopefully some of our members who have been on this journey with their loved ones will share their experiences and advice with you soon but in the meantime, I hope this information we have about the last few weeks and days will give you a rough idea of what could happen towards the end. If you can, I would suggest having someone with you when you go through this as it can be a very tough read.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5pm. They're very caring, and insightful, and will do all they can to give you the information and answers you are seeking at this time.
