My immediate reaction was to write “find a better employer!” but it’s never that easy.

Your GP should be able to sign you off for stress related to a close family member being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Yeah, a gp line stating why you're off is all the proof they need. It's as if they're wanting your dad's treating doctors to give them a detailed letter. They're not gonna do that.
