oesophageal cancer please help

Hi all,

my mum was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer stage 3 N2M0

no treatment options available and only palitive care offered despite M0. We got a second opinion via private health care and were told the same. This is mums 3rd seperate cancer and during treatment for cancer 2 my mum developed neuropathy in her legs during chemo and chemo is no longer an option so all treatment is ruled out.

stent fitted 8 weeks ago. Before stent she was fairly well and prognosis was almost unbelievable. Since the minute the stent has been fitted she has been very sick. Vomiting constantly and unable to eat. No issues with stent as all she brings up is very thick  saliva not any soup or drinks she has taken in. We had Distric nurses out giving Levo anti sickness in a driver until they realised the levo wasn't agreeing with her and making her worse.

no one seems to know what's wrong and causing it. All anti sickness are failing. She is suffering daily, losing weight and getting weaker.

does anyone have any idea or experience with vomiting thick saliva following a stent fitting.

their only recommendation at this stage is she is moved to a hospice which as a family we are unwilling to do. My mum is staying with me and while I am able to and until that is no longer an option I will not place her in an unknown surrounding and leave her alone for 22 hours a day.

my mums specialist nurse has been nothing short of appauling and not helped at all. I asked about a JPEG feeding tube to help her keep up her energy and we were told nothing further will be offered to my mum in regards of eating and feeding. The private consultant at private hospital was disgusted when reading the communication and help offered and reached out to get things moving and still we are no where further.

can anyone help. Has anyone been through this and managed to stop the thick saliva coming constantly. Anything at all.

for contest my mother is 61 years old this is her third cancer we have all been through and we feel lost and alone.

  • Hello julz10,

I am so sorry to hear about everything your mum has been through, poor her with it being her third cancer and it's so sad that no treatment options are available to her and that only palliative care has been offered. It's awful what happened to her after the stent was fitted eight weeks ago and that it caused so much sickness and she has been unable to eat. Your mum must appreciate having you by her side looking after even in these challenging circumstances.

I hope that you will hear from others on the forum who have been through a similar situation and that they will share their experience with you. I hope that you can talk to someone about how to stop this thick saliva. It's a shame that your mum's specialist nurse has been so unhelpful - is there a way perhaps to request to talk to a different specialist nurse and see whether someone else could advise you regarding the thick saliva issue? You could also try and ring your mum's GP and see whether they could point you in the right direction?

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them and ask them for advice - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We're thinking of you and your mum during this difficult time and wanted you to know that you are not alone and hopefully others who've been through something similar before will be along soon to share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
