Syringe driver

Hi all,

My mom was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumour at the start of 2022, the doctors only gave her 8 months so we are so proud she's still with us. Throughout her illness she's never been well enough to leave the house or make any memories however she's detetorated really quickly the past month. On Christmas Eve she was just sleeping all day which is fairly normal for her however we really struggled to wake her. On Christmas Day she started to breath weirdly (the death rattle) and Boxing Day had the syringe driver put in. We are really struggling as a family we never thought she would make it to new year but she has had some days awake and talking which shocked us due to how bad she was before the driver. She's been really bad again today waking up for a few minutes but just mumbling random things. I know everyone is different but it would be so helpful if the nurses or doctors could try and give us some sort of time frame!

sorry for rambling but this is a great platform to get everything off your chest.

  • Hello Chappers01

I'm so sorry to hear that it sounds as if your Mum is in the final days of her life. Undoubtedly this is a difficult time for you all. I hope that your Mum is being kept as peaceful and comfortable as possible and that you as a family are well supported by those involved in her care.

I just want to post to say that you are in our thoughts and the forum is here anytime if you need to chat or to offload things.

    Best wishes,

  • So sorry to hear this. My mum sadly passed away on 4th January after a year of battling sarcoma that had eventually spread to her brain.

The syringe driver will help make her more comfortable as the pain/anxiety medication will be continuous. We too wanted to know how long left but the nurses wouldn't comment, I suppose it depends on the individual. My mum passed away peacefully without pain, holding my dad's hand.

Be kind to yourself and help eachother through this terrible time x
