Late stage stomach cancer

Hi all, I hope you are all well.

My dad has had stomach cancer for about a year and a half now, he has really gone downhill recently and lost so much weight, has no strength and hasn't been eating.

He had fluid that had to be drained from his stomach and the cancer spread making it impossible to eat there for had to have a stent fitted. He is still very unwell and not eating and very weak.

I just don't know what to think about life expectancy, it's something that constantly plays on my mind so I was hoping someone could maybe put some light on it and offer their thoughts?

Thank you

  • Hello Daydreamer66 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am really sorry to hear about your dad having gone downhill recently and losing so much weight. It's sad that he has lost his appetite too and has no strength. There is useful information on our website on stomach cancer including on advanced stomach cancer and on stage 4 stomach cancer

Perhaps you could ask your dad's medical team for their thoughts on his life expectancy? However, it can be really difficult to tell or to give an accurate prognosis but your dad's oncologist will probably be aware of your dad's current situation and will be best placed perhaps to give you some indication as to what to expect.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from others here who have also looked after a loved one with advanced stomach cancer and that they will come and share their story with you.

We're thinking of you and your dad during this difficult time and wanted you to know that you are not alone, that many members of our community will understand what you are going through at the moment.

    Best wishes,

  • I'm so sorry your having to go through this and completely understand what your feeling and I went through exactly the same with my dad who passed away just over a month ago.

The best people to give you an idea of how long your dad has left are the specialists overseeing his care. However I will say I never found any comfort every time I got an update from them about my dad, as it was always much reduced from the update before. My dads cancer spread so fast none of us could keep up. And I felt the same as you a lot of the time on edge wondering if he had weeks or months or just days. So go to his appointments with him and speak to the specialists and don't hesitate to ask them as they will get the question of how long left a lot. Just remember they can't tell you anything exact and there won't be much accuracy.

All the best for your family x
