Is medication helping or is he rallying before death?

My dad has stage 4 lyrgeal cancer. Diagnosed in February, he opted not to have a feeding tube and trach. They will not give him any chemotherapy or radiation so he's just recieving pallative care. He is on 50mg twice a day of Lyrica, morphine patch 10mg and soluble steriods/immunosuppressants 10mg twice a day. He's been on them about 3 weeks now.

Last week his voice was practically gone and he had a rough few days. For years he has struggled to eat and he has had low energy and fatigue.

Today is voice is so much better and he managed to eat a full meal and dessert which he hasn't done in years. I was.so happy to hear this I cried but then I wondered is he just getting better before he dies? Like the calm before the storm? Or is it that the steriods are helping to shrink the tumour?

Iwill be asking his palliative care nurse but now it's 11pm on a Saturday night so I'm just wondering.and hoping he is ok and it is a good thing.

  • Hi there,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of what you're going through at the moment and also that you didn't receive a reply over the weekend.

It's good that you are planning to talk to the nurse about this - they will of course be best placed to advise and to help you understand what to potentially expect.

This forum is always here for support if ever you need it, so do keep on writing things down and reaching out to others as much as you'd like to.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hello, and first of all, may I say how sorry I am for what you are going through.........I have walked in your shoes, and it is a rough journey to watch a parent die.  What I can tell you is that a few weeks before my mum died of cancer, she began to eat an incredible amount of food, and I thought that she must be getting better and that somehow a miracle had occurred and the cancer was gone...........but I was wrong.  She died not long after.  I have heard other people say the same thing.......that shortly before a loved one died, they seemed to rally round.........I am so sorry that I could not give you better news, but I am sure that you would rather hear the truth than sugar-coating, sending you strength and hugs, Violet, xxx
