Low Grade & HPV- Biopsy taken

Hi everyone,

I am just seeking some reasurrance and would like to hear peoples stories.

I had a smear in March after a long time (I honestly don't remember when) I'm 28 now but I do remember getting a letter to book my smear before I went travelling in 2018 and I paid no attention to it.  Something was telling me to get it, I sometimes bled after sex, it was quite painful for a few hours after and I currently have ALOT of discharge, when my partner checked he thought I had cream down there (TMI, sorry).  Anyway, decided to book in for a smear, results came back low grade with HPV and had my colposcopy today and they took a biopsy.

My question is, even though initially tested low-grade is, could this be early cancer? Is there any posibilty at all?

The student nurse told me I could have a look if I liked so I did and seen a rather large area of white, in which I looked away.  Further on I went to look again and the nurse said no, don't look now which I know was because I was clearly uncomfortable with the whole thing.

I do realise I am over thinking but I find it hard not to as I started this journey thinking I'll be fine then abnormal smear.  Thinking again I will be fine then they actually took the biopsy and now thinking again, I will be fine....

Hopefully some stories will help ease my mind.

  • Hello hayls92,

I just wanted to welcome you to Cancer Chat. Abnormal cervical cells are not the same as cancer but, as you will read on this page , if left untreated, there is a risk that some abnormal cervical cells could develop into cervical cancer. So it's great that you have had your colposcopy and rest assured that the treatment is very effective as many on this forum who have also had an abnormal smear will tell you.

I hope this will reassure you and that you will also hear from some of our ladies here who have been in a similar position before and that they will share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
