Advice- stomach cancer

Hi I'm not sure we're to begin. I'm writing this on behalf of my sister in law who at only 37 has been diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer this week.
we are desperate for advice. She traveled back to her home country Latvia 6 weeks ago to get some medical advice for my niece (both have Latvian passports but live in the uk, she's married to my brother who is English) whilst out there she fell ill. She visited a doctor who carried out some tests and took a biopsy on what they believed was a stomach ulcer. However Monday out worst fears were confirmed it's stage 4 cancer and looks like it may have spread to other organs! We are beside ourselves, she's currently in hospital out there and they want to start chemotherapy however the care and support isn't great and she's pretty much alone. We are doing everything we can to get her well to fly home. My question is, what would be the process to help have something in place for her return we don't want to waste time, does anyone have any experience with a simlar situation or any advice re treatment/life expectancy for stage 4. Any help or advice is really appreciated at this time, we have had thing sprung from knowever and feel that we are so helpless with her not being here. Thank you

  • Hello Beckyham

I'm so very sorry to hear about your Sister in-laws diagnosis. It's obviously an incredibly difficult time for you all and I do hope that she is soon well enough to come back to her family.

I'm unsure about some of the questions that you raise in your post. I would suggest that your brother speaks to his wife's GP in the first instance to let them know what has happened and that you are hoping she will be able to return home soon. They should then hopefully be able to get the ball moving quickly once she is back, particularly if she has been able to bring home copies of all the hospital reports, tests, and information since her admission to the hospital in Latvia.

With regards to your questions about treatment and prognosis, we do have some information here about advanced stomach cancer which you may find helpful but if you'd like to give our nurses a call I'm sure they will try and help with as much information and support as they can. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
