Masectomy

Hi Everyone

Hope your all doing well

I'm new here, & was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, multicentric idc which is hormone positive. I'm 34 and having a right Masectomy on 27/10. Has anyone been in the same situation as me? If so how did you get on & how are you doing?

As you can imagine I'm terrified at the moment and I'm looking for some positive stories and people to keep me sane on the long road ahead

Look forward to your replies and stories

  • Hi Chrissie ️

yess & I can definitely live with it I will keep that in mind ️

I had a couple of lymph nodes taken so I will listen to your advice and take it easy.

Did you keep your bra on all the time afterwards? One thing I haven't been told, but when I've looked it says to keep it on to help with healing

    Thankyou

    Kirsty Xx

  • Hi ..

Well I ordered a few sleep masectomy bras from asda ... no fastening so could slide them up my body .. they are pretty ones to .. which helps feel better ... and got 2 masectomy bras from M and S ... for day wear ... lve never gone back to underwire ones sinse ...  just make sure they are looser then normal so they don't rub ..  but love mine ... esp asda ones as they are only bout £7 you can get them on line with that store .. I had no pain hardly from scar .. but under arm ached for a while ... as that takes time to slowly heal .. don't heavy lift with it ...

I'm sure [@Jolamine]‍  will pop by .. but know she's been busy .. she's a great one for info ... so you take care .. baby steps now ... keep in touch as much as you need ... Chrissie xx

  • P S .. if you have something really really soft to put under your arm pit it really helps that not rub too xx

  • Thankyou so much

    speak soon ️

    Hi Kirsty,

I am so glad to hear that you have now got your surgery behind you and that it all went well. It is a good idea to wear a soft bra for sleeping in after surgery. I too found the sources that Chriss has suggested very useful.

I had a small heart shaped cushion which I put under my arm at night and even throughout the day at times. I actually bought two because of the bilateral mastectomy, but found that I could only use one at a time, so alternated between both arms.

The other item that I invested in was a child's seat belt cover (I used two), which cushioned the seat belt slightly and made it more comfortable when I was in the car.

I also agree with Chriss that you shouldn't overstretch yourself or lift anything heavy. I have ended up with bilateral Lymphoedema as a result. The other thing that is important is to keep doing any exercises that you've been given regularly.

Here's hoping that you continue to make good progress.

Always here if you have any questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Good Morning Jolamine

    I hope you're well

Thankyou, I have a Masectomy pillow from Jens friends not sure if you've heard of them or not. They make free pillows

Do you wear the bra all the time or just to sleep in?

Im going to speak to my bcn later, but I can feel like a buzzing sensation where my breast was, any ideas what it could be? It's a really strange feeling.

    Thankyou

    Hi Kirsty,

I wore the bra all the time to start with, but am now just wearing it throughout the day. I am glad to hear that you are going to contact your breast care nurse. I did have some strange feelings in my breast initially, but it was more of a nerve type pain. It is certainly worth discussing your 'buzzing' sensation with your nurse.

Yes, I have heard of Jen's friends and, am glad to hear that you have one of these pillows. Unfortunately, to my knowledge these were not available 10 years ago.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
