Cold cap

Has first chemo on the 17th Dec and used the cold cap, over the last two days my hair has started to come out... Nothing noticeable yet but a fair amount, due for my 2nd chemo on the 7th Jan 2020... Worried I'm not going to be able to keep my hair... Can anyone share their experiences with the cold cap... Thanks in advance xxx

  • Hi just had my 5th session and used the cold cap, my hair fell out but only about 40%  after the first 3 but since then hardly any.i went about a wig but they say I had too much hair My hair is now growing back (White) and my hair is feeling much thicker at roots also use plantur shampoo and conditioner I would definitely carry on x

  • Thank you for ur reply missellies I really appreciate ur advice, well done for keeping ur hair that's so awesome x yesterday I was only losing strands now and then, but today I have had a lot of clumps like the pic I've posted... I'm going to keep persevering with the cap but feel like I'm going to lose my hair anyway if it keeps coming out like this x

  • Hi I used the cold cap and had 18 weekly sessions of taxol I would say overall I lost about 30% of my hair though alot of people said they couldn't tell.  Just a few tips always wet your hair and put conditioner on it before the cold cap goes on, if you can, buy a silk pillowcase it really does help as it doesn't pull your hair.  Buy a shampoo and conditioner say from Holland and Barrett that don't contain any of those hidden nasties.  Use a wide toothed comb and only wash your hair when absolutely necessary.  Don't use a hairdryer or straighteners just let you hair dry on its own.  Hope some of these tips help fingers crossed x

  • Yes my hair came out like this but persevere you've more chance of keeping your hair with it than stopping the cold cap. Might be worth having your hair a little shorter xx

  • Hi, we are in the same situation, im caring for a loved one going through chemo, she had her first chemo  3 weeks ago and used the cold cap, her hair has just started to shed 4 days ago and although its not great clumps it is quite a bit, we are praying that it will stop as this is one of the more traumatic things to face i think for any woman, she has lots of hair which was long but which she has had cut to just under her ears and the wig advisor said its too early to fit a wig because she may only lose around 50% of her hair as she has so much it will hardly be noticeable....next chemo is next week and if enough hair is still there she will carry on with the cold capping....i will keep fingers crossed for you too, but at the end of the day i think if it does come out then we have to accept it, there are lots of lovely wigs and scarfs etc, in which i find women look just beautiful so hoping for the best but prepared for the worst i would say....in any case its worth trying to keep it

  • Hey littleangels,

Thank u for ur reply, I had my second chemo on Tues and less has started to come out, its not in clumps just appears to be the under hair, however my scalp is starting to show through as my hair gets thinner. Yes I had really thick hair so am hoping as I've shed alot the cold cap will be more efficient xxx

I'm going to look into getting a wig ASAP as I'm starting to feel really self conscious about it xxx

I hope ur lovely lady maintains a good amount of her own hair bless her x

This journey is defo hard xx

Lots of hugs being sent to u both x

    Kind regards

  • hi ladies.

I only recently found out I have breast cancer and I need to go through chemotherapy and another op (I’m just recovering from lymph node operation.

Im scared and anxious as no idea what to expect

I got my pet scan and first oncology appt this week and hopefully I get my plan in place this week.

I hope we will continue this journey and support each other and most of all be strong as we can I know it’s very emotional I just feel awful and just in denial xx am thinking of cold cap but not sure I’ve heard it gives you a brain freeze headache but helps too. X

  • Hello Jo,

Hope you don't mind me butting in on your thread but I saw you had the same chemo as I'm having (eighteen weeks low dose Paxlitaxel) and managed to keep nearly all of your hair. I'm three weeks into the treatment and wearing the cold cap. I noticed some shedding yesterday and this morning from the last session on Friday. There was more in the plughole than usual and it's making me nervous. I will keep using the cold cap for as long as it's on the right side of working.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi Cayenne I noticed some shedding of my hair from about week 5, I only use to wash and condition my hair once or twice a week and used a very wide toothed comb just gentlly massage your hair when washing and very tepid water hot water is a definite no no.  When you have the cap put on make sure you have some conditioner in your hair this help the cap to go more easily and I use to pull the chin strap down with my chin (looked like a chipmunk).  I found a silk pillow case really helped as it allows your hair to glide rather than be pulled, also it made my skin feel really soft (an added bonus )  I know the cold cap doesn't work for everyone but just persevere a while longer.  Don't hesitate to contact me if you wish and take care of yourself.
