Breast cancer and Oncotype result CHEMO?

Hello let me explain my background

I am 31 years old and have 3 children,

I was diagnosed with a grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma at 25mm AND high grade medial DCIS at 44mm I'm also PR+ and HR+

i have had a lumpectomy and I'm now going in for a mastectomy due to this, they then also sent off oncotype tests and my results came in at 15 which my consultant said is the high end of low risk. And usually wouldn't give chemo. However she said due to my age she alone thinks I need it.
so I want the best outcome . The mastectomy is great as I know It's gone... but as my result came in 15 would they likely still offer me chemo ? Mainly because of my age, the fact that it will prob reoccurr due to my age being so young and my hormone status.
I have also been told I'll likely have to have tamoxifen and a oestrogen suppression. I honestly am at w point where if I have chemo and it helps then so be it! But also I don't want them to say no if there's a benefit of it helping. This has been an awful time for me abs my family and the thought of going he through this again alongside the anxieties of csncer coming back!

Surely I have a say in my treatment plan?

  • Hello hayleysp87,

I can completely understand why you would want to have a say in your treatment plan so make sure you voice your concerns and talk things through  with your medical team.

Our nurses are also just a free phone call away so don't hesitate to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you manage to find out what is the best option for you in your situation and that you get the best possible treatment adapted to your specific diagnosis.

Hopefully you will hear from some of our members who have been in a similar situation before and they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi  Hayley,

I am Sorry too meet you here! Im 38 and have a young family.

I was diagnosed with Grade 3 IDC and High Grade DCIS Lymph Neg and clear margins from my Lumpectomy. Mine was also Oestrogen Fed HER2-.

My Onco Score was a 10.

Due to the Fact my Grade was a 3 and my age my oncologist told me that Chemo was a good idea and I agreed.

i have had 3xFEC and 3x Docetaxil. My worries were the same! I want to do everything I can possible to ensure that is doesn't come back!  I thought to myself I am fit and healthy so let's get it done..

I am on my last one out of 6 which is on Thursday, I used the cold cap and that worked well. It's really tough but only for the first week after treatment, it is very do-able and the side effects are well managed.

I am sure that if you speak too your Oncologist and tell them how you feel they will take into account your thoughts, Do you want Chemo??

I have Radiotherapy' to come next and also Tamoxifen, I already fear if returning and don't actually know how I will get through life with it hanging over me.

    Love Sarah

  • Hello lovely,

Sorry what is IDC that's not a term I have come across. Really sorry to hear your story :( it's horrible isn't it. How did you find out you had DCIS ?
My issue is I have two sides one part is invasive which is grade 2. However they are not sure they 100% cleared my margins, and I also have grade 3(high grade) DCIS 40mm. So I was offered a mastectomy which I have agreed to.

Yes I would take chemo if they offered it to me I was just worried because my score was 15 they May Say no! However lkke your self my age and grade really should mirror that score.
I am also scared jr will return due to me being young and the risk is higher in 10 years than 5 :( I guess we just have to keep a close eye on our body xx

  • Have you had to have your ovaries suppressed ? Because I am also being told this will happen as well as tamoxifen xx

  • Hi Hayley,

Sorry IDC Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, I found a lump in October 2021,, I think they will suggest Chemo, as mine was a Grade 3 and my age there was no question it was a definite.

Yes I will have an injection to Supress my ovaries but my Oncologist wants me too have them removed, I have my appointment with HIm tomorrow about Radiotherapy and Tamoxifen etc.

Gosh sounds like your going through the Mill. We will have yearly Mammograms for 5 years but i will still be super worried. As you say we will just keep an eye on things.

It's been so hard, such a long process everything seems to take so long. Xxx

  • I have my first oncology appointment this Thursday so we will discuss it all then but I will also be putting all this across to him, as I want the best treatment and I honestly think I need chemo,

ah that makes sense ! See my invasive side was grade 2 ! My DCIS was grade 3

im not sure they do mammograms when you hehe a mastectomy however if they don't remove my other side I would on that ones

did you have genetics? It really is a scary place to be isn't it :( I'm here if you ever need a chat xx

  • Hi, oh yes I am not sure if you still have a Mammogram, you must have some kind of scan.

Yes have a chat when you have your appointment. But I am certain they will suggest Chemo.

No nothing in the family, just bad luck, and I went to the GP she was not concerned at all. Said it was likly a Cyst but I had hurrendous burning on my chest On that side so knew it was something.  I went to the appointment in my own, my husband knew I was going but I didnt tell my Mum as my Dad had just passed away. They were very Matter of Fact when I had my Untrasound, i literally fell too the floor.

I hope you get some answer on Thursday xxx

  • Hey, I hope you're doing well. I was just wondering how your treatment plan went? Did you receive chemo?

I'm going through a similar diagnosis and was told I'm unlikely to get chemo, im in my 20's and much like yourself the thought of it coming back is a cause for some anxiety.

    All the best

sorry to jump on thread but didn’t want you to go unnoticed im not sure these ladies above are online still as posts were 1 year ago ypu msybe lucjy tgey coukd we’ll see it

are you waiting on a Oncotype score ?

  • Thank you for the reply. I'm not waiting on one as of yet, I'll be getting a mastectomy towards the end of the month and sentinel node biopsy and from there ofcourse a clearer diagnosis will come to light.

For the time being extensive high grade dcis and a small amount IDC and hopefully it stays as just that. Is an Oncotype score something everyone gets?
