That Cancer Conversation - Can you trust cancer advice online?

When cancer touches your life, it’s natural to look for answers. But online, those answers can be overwhelming, and sometimes dangerously wrong.

It's a common theme that we see posted about here in the Cancer Chat community. We often find people are left with more questions than answers and more anxiety than reassurance after searching the internet for information about cancer.

In this episode of That Cancer Conversation, a Cancer Research UK podcast, the team explore the rise of cancer misinformation, how you can tell what's real and what could cause harm.

Let us know what you think!

  • I agree sometimes the Internet has a lot to answer for.  A little knowledge is a bad thing especially if you are feeling a bit down.

  • A very powerful podcast. Throughout all the years of being a cancer patient I get so tired of debunking alternative treatments to new patients - this podcast covers everything in detail. Well done.

  • I'd agree with you, MrsBlueSky. We know that for lots of people, a little knowledge can leave people with even more questions than they previously had. If you're already feeling particularly low or struggling, then this can lead to more anxiety and often the information found isn't completely relevant or accurate to start with. It can feel like a vicious cycle at times.

It can be helpful in those situations to reach out and talk with a cancer professional, such as our team of nurses, who can help offer some clarity and reassurance.

  • Thanks AngieT

I can understand when you say you get tired of debunking alternative treatments. I've been at Cancer Research UK for over a decade, and it still amazes me how wild and wacky some of the recommended alternative treatments that can be found online are!

We're glad that you enjoyed this podcast.
