Lost my mam last year

Hi... my mam was 53 when she passed away due to cancer... this hit my family bad as she found out, she has chemo and ended up in hospital for 3 months really poorly. We got her home and she picked up. We had the physio coming out to help her learn to walk again and everything was fine. My mam was terminal at this point we were all devistated by the news but we kept our spirits high. She was offered radiotherapy which she became unwell again after this and eventually was unresponsive and then later died on the 4th april 2017. We were devistated. It took the life of my mam and her mam before this when i was very young. Cant help but get it off my mind that i could get cancer at somepoint when i get older. I am 25 coming up 26, really dont know if to go and get tested for the cancer gene.... would like some advice thank you for taking time to read my story x

  • Hello Lauren92 and welcome.  I am sorry you have lost your mam and gran to cancer. There is a section of this website headed "Genetic testing for cancer risk".  I have had a quick look and it appears that this is only possible for ovarian, breast, bowel and prostate cancer.  If you would like to look at it click on ABOUT CANCER then Causes of Cancer and you will find the information.  If you have further questions you would like to ask I would suggest you post your enquiry into Ask the Nurses who can probably answer the questions best (well, a lot better than me anyway).  Best wishes to you.  Annie

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Lauren although I'm really sorry to hear read about your mam and would like to offer you my sincerest condolences on her passing last year.

I noticed Annieliz was trying to direct you to some information on our website so I thought I would stop by and share it with you in case you were struggling to find it. You can read more about genetic testing for cancer risk just here and on the causes of cancer page there is a section called inherited genes which you may find useful as well.

If you did want to chat to our cancer nurses you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m or make a new post about this in their section of the forum just here.

    Kind regards,
