My dad passed away 1 week ago

My dad had leukemia for many years, in and out of remission, so we were lucky to have this time with him, but it hurts so much. I live in the UK and my family are in Australia. My husband and children were months away from moving back to Australia to spend time with him. I'm absolutely heartbroken. We went over at Christmas and he got covid and things just went downhill from there. He was going to have one more treatment for his cancer but was too unwell. The next thing we get told he has a week to live. We flew over to be with him for a few days before he passed away. I'm now back in UK and struggling so much. I just want to be with my family in Aus. My husband is back at work and I just have to carry on as normal, trying to look after the kids. It's so hard.

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Ash86, although I'm so sorry to hear your dad passed away last week. You have my deepest condolences for your loss.

Coping with grief is very tough, even more so when you're so far away from your family, but I hope you can take some comfort from knowing that we are here for you Ash and are sending all our support to you at this very difficult time.

I'm sure some of our members who have also been in this position will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but if you feel like you're really struggling then it may be worth seeking out further support, either through your GP or grief support charities such as Cruse Bereavement Support and Sue Ryder. They will be able to offer you emotional support and advice to help you cope with the grieving process.

As you say, the time you had with your dad is incredibly precious and I hope being able to look back on the moments and memories you created with him will give you strength as you navigate your way through the challenging journey that lies ahead.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
